Computer Safety for Hurricane Season

Well, it’s that time again – hurricane season; and we all want to protect our technology and electronic equipment in the face of a storm. So what should we do?

In preparation of a hurricane, if you are a business owner or even if you’re not, it is a good idea to take inventory of all of your computers equipment and related electronics in the unfortunate instance that they incur any damage. Easy access to information such as computer make and model numbers, serial numbers and even operating systems can make your insurance claims process easier.

Working with an external battery can also grant some peace of mind. When lightning strikes and power goes out, an external battery will give you the extra time you need to save anything you may have been working on, so that no time or effort is lost.

Regularly back-up all your important data during hurricane season. Computer file back-up is actually a good thing to practice all year long, so that your critical data is protected from anything, including fire, theft, floods, tornados, etc. Taking advantage of The Cloud is a great way to do that.

Prior to any significant storm, all electronics should be powered down, unplugged and stored in a safe place, away from windows and off the floor. Don’t forget your peripherals; and if you want to take an extra step of precaution, you can cover your electronics with a plastic sheet.
